When the BBC wanted to put on a show for fans of hit show Peaky Blinders, it approached Sketch Events to design and implement a one-day activation to turn the red-carpet premiere of the show’s new series into a truly immersive and shareable publicity stunt.

Actors appearing in the fourth series of the programme including Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory and Aidan Gillan met fans on a special live red carpet experience before enjoying a sneak peak of the first episode at Cineworld, Broad Street. Over 35,000 people applied for free tickets to event to see what the city’s most notorious gangsters had in store for the new series.

To welcome the gang home, Sketch Events transformed Bishopsgate Street next to the cinema into a whole 1920s experience, with contemporary music, actors, props and the exterior of the Bulls Head pub transformed into the show’s iconic pub, The Garrison.

Exterior props, dressing and activities in the street included flaming barrels with smoke and fog, actors pushing vintage prams, search lights on the roof, and a horseman riding a black horse bare-back down the street and along the red carpet – where a 1920’s-styled band played jazz and tracks from the Peaky Blinders soundtrack.

Inside the pub, actors in character added to the atmosphere throughout the day by interacting with tastemakers and invitees, and an authentic pop-up barber shop was brought to life with celebrities haircuts, and even a couple of dogs styled and all shared on Facebook Live.

The extras in character were directed throughout the day with various interactive scenes with the crowds building along the red carpet, creating atmosphere by dancing while the band were playing and generally creating an authentic atmosphere and anticipation in the lead up to the celebrities appearing from The Garrison onto the red carpet.

With considerable coverage across the national press and social media, the activation delivered on its brief, promoting the new season to international media, celebrities, social influencers and fans.
