But for us PR’s and event managers, Christmas can be really busy with more events and activations in December than the rest of the year! With this in mind, here are some of our favourite Christmas Tree installations and stunts to get you in the festive mood…
Starbucks Red Cup installation
To celebrate the season and help Londoners get in the holiday spirit, Starbucks ran a campaign featuring a four-metre-tall Red Cup installation. The “tree” of cups will light up gradually as consumers tweet photos and messages. It also smells like a gingerbread latte! This socially charged light installation was featured across digital displays throughout King’s Cross station.
Claridge’s upside down tree
The lobby of Claridge’s has been taken over by an upside down Christmas tree this year. Instead of growing up out of their classy chequerboard floor (let’s face it, emerging from the ground is pretty much a prerequisite of being a tree), it’s dangling from the ceiling, roots akimbo. The installation has been designed by Karl Lagerfeld, and one of the lobby’s chic chandeliers has also been replaced with an inverted tree.
Lakeside’s celebrity fairy
Big Brother star Chantelle Houghton rose to dizzying new heights of fame this week when she was hoisted 54ft into the air atop Lakeside Shopping Centre’s Christmas Tree.
The 27-year-old donned a sparkly pink dress and a special harness for her latest role as the shopping centre’s own Christmas fairy.
Galeries Lafayette candy Christmas tree
The only Parisian department store with an Art Nouveau dome 43 metres up, Galeries Lafayette’s Paris Haussmann store has always gone to town with its stunning Christmas decorations. This year’s installation is a gigantic, spectacular tree surrounded by an abundance of balloons and giant candy made from mylar foil, all scattered around under the Dome.
Auckland’s 10m tall LEGO tree
You can build anything out of LEGO it seems, including a 10m tall Christmas tree made from 450,000 bricks, weighing 3500kg! Ryan NcNaught, one of only 14 Lego Certified Professionals in the world – and the only one in the Southern hemisphere – put Auckland on Santa’s map last year by erecting a towering Lego tree to put other evergreens to shame. The creator and his team of LEGO builders invested some 1200 hours into creating this Christmas phenomenon in the city’s Aotea Square.
Disney’s St. Pancras stuffed toy tree
Another eye-catcher that may have accounted for many missed trains and cancelled meetings, the Disney Christmas Tree in London’s St. Pancras train station was covered with fluffy toys from its 45-ft high top to bottom. The Disney characters ran the gamut from the classics Mickey, Ariel, and Dumbo to the more modern Elsa from the movie Frozen.
Murano’s Natale di Vetro installation
The island of Murano hosts Natale Di Vetro, or Christmas in Glass festival, every year – which includes an elegant Christmas tree entirely made of Murano glass. Fortunately, the winds are mild on this side of Venice, so the stunning tree is unlikely to shatter!
