Clapham Common
To build a giant Mona Lisa painting to promote Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist Of The Year.
Sketch were asked by Taylor Herring to create a 14m (46ft) high easel displaying a giant Mona Lisa mosaic on Clapham Common. We enlisted the creative skills of multimedia artist Quentin Divine to produce a bespoke work of art. The piece was made using images submitted by entrants to the National Portrait Artist of the Year competition. The canvas is made up of 84 images and the complete structure weighed 3 tonnes. It was anchored by an extra 12 tonnes of ballast to prevent it being blown away. Overall the canvas was 85 times bigger than the original portrait and stands at double the average height of a two-storey house. It took the multimedia artist a week to create the giant portrait mosaic. The PR stunt broke the record as the largest ever easel to be displayed in Europe.
